Hi gardeners! How’s it growing? I am back with another YouTube video for y’all and this time, we’re doing a Taste Review! This video setup is still a bit new to me, but I was extremely excited for this one because I was going to get to taste the famous Sun Gold Tomato for the very first time…and boy does it live up to its expectations; I wanted to share my experience with everyone, so go check out the video below and see for yourself! I harvest these tomatoes from my small Kratky Hydroponic System along with some cabbage for my salad and then I do a little taste review, I hope you enjoy!
Do read on further for more details on its taste and if you enjoy my content, make sure you subscribe to my newsletter, social media, and to the FateWorks Farms YouTube channel for your much appreciated support!
Sun Gold Tomato Taste Review
Smell: You can smell the sugar levels on this tomato just oozing out calling you to eat them; they smell super sweet even prior to cutting into them, not to mention the vine and foliage also smells sweet, filling up my entire grow room with that delicious scent. They get a 5 on the strength of the smell.
Skin or Peel: Sun Golds have a rather thin skin that gets noticeably more soft/tender as the tomato ripens, making them prone to cracking. When you bite into it, the skin gives easily unlike other varieties that may have an audible pop and crunch. The skin has a certain level of fruity acidity to it, which I rather enjoy.
Inside Texture: These tomatoes are reminiscent of eating a grape; not in flavor, but the texture is grape-like, although with a little bit more give. They’re not mealy; they have a nice smooth texture and are really juicy all at the same time.
Sweetness: The Sun Gold tomato gets its reputation from how sweet they are predisposed to be. Well, I can attest to that because these are probably one of, if not THE sweetest tomatoes I’ve ever had. They get a 5 on sweetness and I’d give them more if the scale worked that way…These ended up with a whopping 14% on their Brix score!!!
Acidity: I would give these tomatoes a 1 on acidity as the only thing they had slightly acidic to them was the skin when chewed.
Tomato Flavor: When you bite into these, you don’t perceive the tomato flavor until the strong sweetness goes away, and when you do, it’s kind of this pleasant lingering taste/smell in the background. I give these a 1.5 on tomato flavor. You’ll taste the tomato, but not overwhelmingly so. You also don’t really get any miscellaneous notes of anything else in this tomato; it is simply sweet!
Seeds: Not that it bothers me whichever way, but I did not find these to be overly seedy, just a regular amount. They get a 2.5 on a scale of seed quantity.
